Voodoo Vaudeville Presents Dead Glam
Published 7th Jan 2009 by Chris Challis
Welcome to the world of Voodoo Vaudeville, where sinister figures stalk the shadows in a luscious never-never land of defiant performance, deviant theatricality, twisted cabaret, cruel yet tender comedy and cutting edge contemporary dance. On Saturday 24 January, the Voodoo crew does the danse macabre with your favourite rock star in Dead Glam ? an exploration into the world of the fated rock n? rollers, the dearly departed space oddities, and the last of the twentieth century boys.
They lived fast, they died young? and Voodoo Vaudeville are digging them up again for one last night of glam excess! Let their long-gone spirits possess you and enjoy an evening of pure 70?s excess in your finest platform boots, biggest hair and most sparkling make-up. Providing music throughout the night are Glam Chops - the front-runners of this year's glam rock revival. Currently in negotiations to headline the main stage at next year's Glastonbury (with Eavis sticking to his original response of he'll "see how it goes"), the group?s members can be seen performing in various side projects such as David Devant & His Spirit Wife and Art Brut.
The evening is also packed full with the very best cabaret and burlesque acts on the circuit featuring performance artiste Jonathan Orchard and his blue egg whilst musical curiosities Lady Fitz-Frisky and Miss Maevia Mannish ? described by Time Out as ?white-hot ones to watch? ? present their own take on pop and rock classics from the past? plus much more!
Voodoo Vaudeville has existed as a company since 1999, created by the cabaret artist Chris Cresswell. Chris? work has included five years touring with comedy circus Ra Ra Zoo playing to international audiences as well as teaching at Circus Space in London, Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts and Die Etage Theatre School Berlin. He has appeared on numerous television commercials around the world, as well as appearing on Blue Peter, The Generation Game, and most recently appeared as Prodnose in Tim Burton?s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The first Voodoo Vaudeville show was at Komedia in December 1999 - an anarchic mix of bravado, brouhaha and art comedy, it went on to create a cult following with its kooky comp?res Lennie and Morris and their mixture of improvised comedy, puppets, dances and audience participation. Since then the popular troupe have become a legendary and renowned internationally touring company, performing shows around the world (including sell-out out shows at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Brighton) with themes taken from everything from Berlin Cabaret and Mardis Gras to Tintin!
VOODOO VAUDEVILLE presents DEAD GLAM visit Komedia Brighton on Saturday 24 January at 7.30pm. Tickets are ?10 available on-line at www.komedia.co.uk/brighton or from the Box Office on 0845 293 8480.
