Wine And Dine For Less At The Coal Shed
Published 19th Jan 2012 by Jo Reeder

Christmas is over and it’s time to reign in the spending, so why not beat the January blues (and credit card bill) with a visit to the Coal Shed restaurant in Brighton? To help ease diners in to the New Year, the restaurant has introduced regular bring-your-own nights in an effort to allow people to carry on eating out without the worry of an expensive wine bill.

For a £5 corkage fee, diners can bring their own wine to the restaurant on Monday nights. So whether they want to crack open that special bottle of Burgundy they’ve been saving, or a vintage Bollinger, people can come and enjoy it in the convivial surroundings of The Coal Shed. There is also a private dining room available free of charge, perfect for a group of friends who may want to share bottles with each other over a relaxed dinner date.

The usual evening menu applies, offering diners the chance to sample some of the best beef money can buy – sourced from Longhorn cattle – the preferred breed of top chefs, such as Heston Blumenthal. Alternatively, people can tuck into a simple Steak Burger with Dripping Chips, Pan Fried Pollack or Cauliflower Pakoras. Side dishes are also delicious, all priced at £2.00 they include Boston Baked Beans, Cauliflower Cheese, Root Vegetable Mash and Heritage Tomato Salad.

Nestled on Boyce’s Street, on the edge of Brighton’s historic Lanes, The Coal Shed opened in September last year with a very simple plan: to serve the best grilled meat and fish on the South Coast. Owner and manager Razak Helalat wanted to move away from the tried-and-tested gastro pub formula, and open a restaurant that supported local producers and farmers from all over Sussex. Fish is sourced from BN1 Fish Sales down the road in Shoreham, and meat is locally sourced from Garlic Wood Farm in West Sussex, which is dedicated to producing the finest quality sustainable meat farmed in harmony with the natural environment.

The bring-your-own evenings start on Monday 9th January and are set to run throughout January and February (terms & conditions apply*); to book a table or the private dining room call 01273 322998 or visit www.coalshed-restaurant.co.uk.
