Michelle ShockedAn excellent night. I'd also seen the gig last Friday at Union Chapel and having arrived late found Michelle Shocked doing the support slot as well. Just in case it was planned but un-announced I was at the Komedia early and sure enough she was on doing a solo slot again!Overll I had another great night, the band were excellent and Michelle herself on top form. Most old favourites were played, Anchorage twice which was great. Roll on her next tour... |

Sly & RobbieThe original drum and base from the masters! What an excellent night it was (with the exception for the "lovers rock" duo at the end of the set) Sly and Robbie demonstrated with ease that they are still the best live drum and base act in the world! |

Karnataka At The Komedia BrightonI was at the Komedia show with a couple of friends having never been in the venue before I didn't know what to expect & I was pleasantly surprised.I had seen Karnataka once before at the Brook in Southampton last year & they were good then, but tonights show was FANTASTIC! The vocals from Lisa and her backing vocalist were beautiful, one minute soft & haunting the next full on rock! Simply outstanding musicianship from everybody & they were all more than happy to meet everyone afterwards for a chat and a signing session. Attendance was a little on the scarce side of perhaps 100 people or so but I know this is the first time they have really played down here, so maybe on the next tour with the new material out in the new year, attendances will be up. I cant understand why they aren't playing to thousands! if you like your classic rock on an "epic" scale with a Celtic twist, performed superbly then go and see them. You will not be disappointed. Their website is www.karnataka.org though I dont see any pictures from the Komedia yet. Well done to Andy the sound man & the lighting guy as well. nice work chaps! |

An Evening With Johnnie WalkerAn Evening with DJ Johnnie Walker was very entertaining and insightful. Since listening as a young teenager to Radio Caroline with Johnnie doing the late night courting slot (when he said he played music to snog to), I would listen with my transister radio on low, under the bedcovers, and Percy Sledge's "Let me wrap you in my warm and tender love" playing soft and sweet. I couldn't wait to grow up! He's been there all my life, a rebellious spirit unafraid to stand up to the Establishment and passionate about good music. Of course too many years have passed and too many of us have gone grey but we were happy to tap into that youthful exuberance and how we all once rocked! He mentioned how he lost his regular Drivetime slot on Radio 2 to Chris Evans under some duress, which seemed criminal at the time to his many fans who thought he was the best thing on that station. Having successfully battled with cancer it seemed an insult but he now has a Sunday evening programme and stands in for Terry Wogan. |

Oasish & StereotonicsI booked this as my partner is a big Stereos fan, having seen them numerous times at various venues. I figured that he would be a good judge of whether the Stereotonics were anything like the original band. And the verdict....????? They were! The lead singer has perfected the voice, look and stance of Kelly Jones and, to my partner's amazement even had the 'between song introductions/ comments' ( not sure what the technical term is for this! ) down to a T!!!!!! Accompanied by highly talented musicians, the band has obviously done its homework. Oasish, in my opinion, were even better. Consisting of the majority of the same band members as Stereotonics, 'Liam' sung, swore and cockily strutted around the stage whilst the crowd waved, pogo-ed and generally rocked to Wonderwall, Roll with it and many other hits.... An entertaining evening- brilliant value for a tenner!!!!! |

Hayseed DixieThese guys are absolutely amazing - I love them - the original pioneers of Rockgrass. They have some new original material - which is great and very funny - however they are most renowned for their hillbilly covers of classic rock songs.Sounds like a gimic, but they are a truly great live show - and their music is top quality. Don't miss it! |

John Hegley And FriendsThe Komedia can usually be relied on to provide quality entertainment and Hammer and Tongue is one of my favourite nights. I had expected John Henley and Friends to be of the same high standards and cannot tell you how disappointing it was. The first half veered between being cringingly bad and mind-numbingly boring, a succession of middle-aged men climbing on stage to boost frail egos, sing appalling songs and tell pathetic jokes. I can't tell you what the second half was like because I left during the interval. The only real joke of the evening was that we'd paid a tenner to go. |
