I'm sorry to say this but I was served the worse piece of battered cod ever. It tasted like they had just cooked it after buying it frozen from the local shop, but then I would have thought even then it should have tasted better then it did. I hardly ate any of my it and the waitress when taking my plate away didn't seem interested to find out whether I enjoyed it or not. The only wine you can order by the glass is the house wine, which tastes terrible. All in all it ruined a perfectly nice day trip to Brighton as it made me so angry to be knowingly served food that is not up to standard. I have no idea how they managed to get good reviews on this site and yes I would have rather have gone to MacDonalds at the end of the day.

I wanted especially to go to D'Arcys for my wedding anniversary dinner as I had been there 2 weeks previously and had a wonderful fish casserole with vegetables and lovely ice cold wine.

How disappointed I was last night when the casserole had 1 potatoe in it, no other vegetables, hardly any fish and the gravy was like water, it was absolutely disgusting, my husband had the same. The wine was warm. We did tell the waitress that it hadn't been as good as previously but my husband wouldn't let me complain properly so as not to spoil our evening.

We also spoke to the Danish couple next to us and they left their meal. They thought it was sole but it definitely was not.

I had been raving about it to friends and recommended they go there but I shall certainly reverse that.

On a good note, the waitress was good and so were the starters.

We chose this restaurant because of its good reputation but it was a disaster. The place was a joke, we were so cramped we could hear everyones conversation. The music was an instrumental collection of Elton Johns greatest hits on a loop, the table clothes looked like curtains. We had booked the week before which they had no record of and told us 'we can fit you in if you wait'.

I had Red Snapper which was overdone (far too chewy) and the waitress added things we hadnt eaten or drank to our bill then refused to take them off telling us she 'didnt know the menu'. They overcharged us by at least £10 but refused to let us look at the menu again to check- it seemed the prices has gone up while we were eating.

I would never bother with this place again, there are lots of other restaurants in the Lanes that looked far more promising.

Terrible Service At D'arcys

We visted this resturant as a party of Six on Sunday afternoon, it looked an inviting resturant with a good selection of fish dishes on the blackboards outside. Unfortunelty we were met with nothing but rudeness from our female waitress and the terrible service left a very nasty taste indeed.

When we asked for a glass of sparkling wine (from the selected listed under champagne sparkling wine on the menu) the response was patronising and downright rude, the waitress stated that they dont do sparkling wine, I suggest they dont list any wines by the glass under that section of the menu then.

In additton when we asked what the specials were the waitress responded "specials, what do you mean". Quite frankly if a waitress does not know what the phase specials means she needs some retraining. Trying to get the list of specials off the waitress was like pulling teeth and most of what was listed was actually on the menu, which left us completely confused. If we hadn't of already had our drinks, I think we would have left the resturant as the tone of this head waitress was disgraceful.

Despite this, overall the food was very good, one person in our party however did find hair in her pasta and when we pointed this out to the waitress there was no appology just "that funny all our chefs are bald"!

If you are looking for an inviting pleasant dinning experience with helpful friendly staff, I would walk past this resturant as even though on the whole the food was good, the service was nothing but dispointing and the whole meal felt like an effort.

I travel a lot from LA to China and tend to eat Fish mostly so finding a charater restuarant in brighton that you would find in romatic places in the world like Paris, Rome, Madrid, in the lanes in brighton was lovely. I found Darcy's to be a delightful restaurant to eat at and the food very good indeed which I really enjoyed. I am shocked to see what some people say about the place after my experince and would not in anyway listen to what they have to say. If you want to eat good food and fresh where the vegtables are fresh and the fish then I would recommend D'Arcy's.

I have just returned from a meal with my family at D'Arcys Seafood restaurant and I have to say I have rarely been so disappointed by a meal. This is a warning to anyone who is thinking of going to this restaurant on the Argus 'dine for £5' offer. It seems that they have made a separate menu of cheap and nasty food especially for this deal. Me and my family are all seafood lovers and after reading previous reviews and looking at the restaurants website we were looking forward to our meal. When we received our menus there was very little choice of mainly pasta dishes, and this was supposed to be a seafood restaurant! As the choice on the £5 menu was so limited we opted for meals from the £10 menu thinking these dishes sounded slightly more tempting, How wrong we were! I ordered the seafood pasta which was spaghetti in an insipid looking sauce with, what were quite obviously cheap frozen prawns, a few bits of white fish and a few mussels for appearance. A cod and chips was also ordered and it looked ok but for £10 with dessert I thought it was extremely over priced and this was supposed to be a special offer!

Now for dessert - I had cheap supermarket ice cream with squirty cream on top, absolutely appalling, and the rest of my family had what looked like a kids party trifle with tinned fruit and jelly.

What made things worse was that we were sat next to a blackboard which listed all the lovely fresh caught fish that they usually do, none of which is on the offer menu. I was later told by the manager that they do this special offer menu to promote their restaurant but I will certainly never be going back and I doubt anyone else who has tried this menu will do either, its just such a shame as it seems their regular menu would actually be quite nice.

Have just come back from Brighton after having eaten at Darcy's. We have both eaten at many restaurants and abroad and have to say we thought it very over priced. The food was good but I wouldn't say it was worth the extremely high prices that are charged. We had the the crevettes to start, I had seabass and my husband had the sea food linguine. The salad I had was pretty poor and not very well presented. We also had a bottle of house wine and two sweets. The total bill being £97.00!!! Yes the food is fresh, but the restaurant was cramped I would say the service was fairly poor. I won't be rushing back there.

Now before I start, let me just say that I have been to some fantastic restaurants both in the UK and abroad, and having worked in a very good one, I do know the price of fish etc. and also know what to expect regarding service. This place was a huge let down. Staff were grumpy old women who were surly and rude or young non-english speaking eye candy. The owner, I presume she was the owner, strutted about barking orders at her staff and ignoring her customers.

The food was over priced, and tasted average. Main courses in the region of £15-20 but then extra for vegetable and potatoes. The fish was OK, I had halibut with a shrimp sauce, but you could count the shrimps on one hand, my salad (£3.95) was small and boring (lots of iceburg lettuce). My husband had grilled trout and almonds, the almonds were soggy and his vegetables (£4.50) were overcooked, possibly reheated in the microwave and had no taste at all. Hardly fine dining.Drinks also very expensive, Vodka & coke and a bottled beer came to £7.20.

10% service charge hidden in the bill, which when queried we were told was displayed all about the place, difficult considering we were outside. Service was non-existant, they brought food and drinks to the table and left us to service ourselves, hardly worth 10% of the bill. Total bill came to over £54 which considering we had two main courses and a total of three drinks, is hugely expensive. Never will I go there again or recommend it to anyone.

I have traveled the world and mostly eat fish. I found Darcy's to be on my top ten in the world for restaurants to eat at. I am shocked to see what some people say about the place and quite honestly find them ignorant in there views, maybe they should stick with fast food joints as Mac Donald’s.

People should go and buy fresh fish and see how much it costs before making ridiculous comments and try eating at other fine dining fish restaurants.

Having read the reviews I was appalled by the negativity. I live in Brighton and over the years despite the more modern array of restaurants constantly being built, I do find myself drawn back to D'Arcy's again and again. I think that the best food there is the Italian selection, probably due to the fact the owner is Italian, so for any of the people who gave D'Arcy's a negative review all I have to say to them is try the Lasagne! At £5.95 for a large lasagne and garlic bread, I hardly see how this can be expensive. The pasta's are all delicious and more than good value for money, and for that matter of far better quality than the surrounding Italian restaurants, without mentioning names. As for the staff there they are all extremely polite, friendly and enthusiastic and the manageress/owner is one of the most charming and vibrant women you will ever come across. The only reason I hesitated to give the place a 5 was due to the decor which in my opinion could do with updating.
